Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these medications need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
